Last Friday, October 28th, we started our fourth year of banding
Northern Saw-whet Owls on the inner Piedmont of Virginia in Campbell
County just outside of Lynchburg.  We run from the end of October to
early December, as many nights as I can manage.  Last year we netted our
highest total of owls to date, 52, in 26 nights of operation.  I run
five nets end-to-end, at one site, and have nets open until 11 PM.  This
year I have six students assisting me, so I think we will be in
continuous operation for the first time, weather permitting.

On Friday we only had the nets running with an audio lure for about 2
1/2 hours from 8:30-11:00 PM because our tape went bad.  But we had one
owl in that time.  On Saturday the 29th we had another delay when the
splitter jack from the two bullhorns to the tape recorder broke.  From
8:30-11:00 PM we again caught one owl, and I netted one additional owl
be staying open another hour.  The last two nights we have come up
empty, and tonight's prospects look similar, until the cold front
passes.
