VA birders...
Has anyone spotted the sandhill crane formerly making daily appearances at
Smith Pond, near Shoope, VA? I was one of several birders who did not see it
Sunday evening (scoping faithfully between 5:30 and after 9:00 PM, full
dark). Our understanding was that it had been seen Sunday AM. Haven't seen
any posts since that day and wondering if it did indeed show up in the early
AM of Monday, July 29?
The directions were excellent, the countryside (and other bird species)
wonderful, and we'd be inclined to make another Arlington-to-Staunton
journey, if the crane has been seen since Sunday AM at any time.
Other highlights: Plentiful deer (including twin fawns in the cattle field
adjacent to the pond), blue grosbeak song, numerous meadowlarks and
goldfinches, indigo buntings, grasshopper sparrows, a Savannah sparrow, and
-- a wild turkey on Rt. 705.
