Hello VAbirders,
While visiting Adkins Arboretum (Eastern Shore of MD)with several
friends today, one of them related to me that her husband was certain he
saw a Sandhill Crane yesterday, about 3:00pm, at the Springfield Golf and
Country Club on Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield, VA. He isn't a birder,
but has seen Sandhill Cranes various times, including this winter on a golf
course in Florida. He saw the bird lift off and fly away in the opposite
direction. At first he assumed it to be a Great Blue Heron. He then
noticed a bright red crest and realized it must have been a Sandhill.
BTW, on our way to Adkins today, just as we crossed the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge, about 100 Tundra Swans flew fairly low, directly over
us. Impressive sight! At the Arboretum we hiked the trails awhile (in the
rain) and heard/saw among some of the usual woodland birds, Pine Warbler,
YB Sapsucker, and Brown Creeper.
The day was skimpy birdwise, but the rain was welcome.
