Hi VA-bird,
Just a quick note for those thinking about leaving work early this
afternoon. The Swallow-tailed Kite was around all morning at the Marriott
Ranch and will almost surely be around for those thinking about chasing it.
It seems strange that this bird has stuck around for so long.
Shorebirding at the Dulles Wetlands is good but frustrating these days. The
extremely low water levels have exposed more mudflats than is usual, but the
thick vegetation makes viewing from the road difficult. The highlight today
was a Semipalmated Plover among numerous Killdeer, Least Sands, Solitary
Sands, and a few Spotted Sands. Singles of each Greater Yellowlegs and
Pectoral Sandpipers were present as well.
Passerine migration is beginning even if it is not very obvious. I've had
Northern Waterthrush and American Redstart within the last few days.
Take it easy,
Alex
