Concerned with the snow and for the immature male Rufous hummingbird banded in
my yard last weekend, I devised a plan to keep him going through it all.
I managed to get to Home Depot last night before the snow started and bought a
spectacular setup! I got 1 large clip-on lamp and 2 smaller ones; this was to
accommodate the three-armed extension pole I have off the deck and three
feeders. I screwed in 100-watt Halogens, which seem to give off enough heat
(nothing froze), and topped the whole thing off with an oversized umbrella to
keep it all dry.
The first time my little fellow came to feed this morning, he kept peering up
into the light fixtures and seemed a bit puzzled by the contraption. Since
then, he's been making regular trips in without hesitation. He likes it so much
that he's alternating use of all three feeders!
I took some photos of my handiwork, but for obvious reasons, I won't have them
developed anytime soon. So, I drew a facsimile and scanned it in:

The rendering doesn't quite capture it -- all the fresh-fallen snow is missing!
Hope everyone is keeping as warm and dry as the hummer.
