The Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Wilson's Warbler have survived two very
cold nights in Cape Charles - last night's low was 9 degrees. I've warmed
feeders and put them out each morning before dawn (it's up to 18 degrees now -
what
a contrast to 76 degrees last week), as they would have remained frozen
otherwise. About four dozen birders have seen the hummer and warbler this
year, and
all 21 folks at my father's 80th birthday here yesterday got to see them, a
nice bit of color for a cold January day.
Charles Ziegenfus and party from Harrisonburg found a Common Murre (well
described) on the second island of the CBBT over the weekend, and apparently
North
Carolina birders (whose names I don't know) had seen it or another or the
fourth island. I'll pass on any further word of this bird or other alcids if I
hear of it. To date, only one Common Murre has been documented in Virginia
(the photograph was published in the Raven).
