Canada geese were very plentiful yesterday morning (12/28), though I found no
Cackling geese. I admit that I could not check all of the birds in the various
flocks.
At the ponds near Farley Farm:
Ruddy Duck 49
Mallard 3
American Wigeon 1
N. Shoveler 2
Bufflehead 3
American Coot 2
Canvasback 16
Hooded Merganser 2
Northern Harrier 1
Bald Eagle 1 ad.
Horned Lark 3
Rock Dove 20
Canada Geese @ 2573 (73 counted on ponds, 2500 estimated in hugh flock in
fields across route 3)
At Pope's Creek Picnic Area:
Tundra Swan 150
Great Blue Heron 2
Turkey Vulture 2
Black Vulture 1
Double-crested Cormorant 1
Mallard 130
Gadwall 14
American Black Duck 6
Canada Goose 1 -- seemed very small, but no other Geese to compare it with.
At the Beach:
Lesser Scaup 91
Bufflehead 25+
Long-tailed Duck 1 male
Surf Scoter 54+
Black Scoter 7
Common Goldeneye 56+
Canvasback 47
Ruddy Duck 110
Bald Eagle 1 ad and 1 juv.
Cedar Waxwing est 100
There was also a flock of 284 Canada Geese in the fields between the picnic
area and the beach. I passed two more flocks of about 300 each along route 3.
