Hi folks,

The two Ross's Geese were present again this morning at Craney Island in
Portsmouth, Va.  They were in the same general vicinity as reported last
week, south of the north cross-dike, mid-way between the east and west ends.
For those familiar with the territory, the location is just east of the area
formerly known as "mailbox pond" (although on the opposite side of the
cross-dike from the pond) which is now actually holding water for the first
time in months. They continue to associate with Canada Geese which numbered
well over 100 birds this morning.  They have also been joined by at least 4
Snow Geese, giving a nice comparison without complicating the search too
much. One of the Snows appears to be a blue morph or blue-white
intermediate.  The birds spend time walking in and out of vegetation and are
frequently obscured, but eventually they come out into open areas.  The nice
clear sky this morning made for great lighting, but it was very cold and
windy.  On the plus side, the mosquitoes have vanished.

Again this morning there was a large gathering of gulls in the James River,
perhaps 5,000 to 7,000 birds.  A couple of Gannets continue to mix in with
the gulls in their feeding swarm.  Other birds included an immature Bald
Eagle, Red-throated Loon, and a flock of about 30 Horned Grebes.

Good birding,

David Clark
Norfolk, VA.
