I seek nesting Cerulean Warblers in Southside Virginia.
A Robert Russell found singing Ceruleans at Fountain Creek Swamp in
Greensville County 12 June 1988 and 5 June 1991.
Can anybody help me contact him? He had moved to Madison, Wisconsin since
then.
Does anybody know about Cerulean Warbler in southern (non-mountain)
Virginia?
[There is a population of the species on the Roanoke River (50 males?), the
next river south, in the coastal plain (Weldon to Hamilton, NC). It seems
logical that birds (offspring?) from this coastal plain population sometimes
orient a bit wrong, to end up in the next river basin north or south.
(Originally, I had thought that perhaps there was gene flow down and up the
Roanoke River, but I have been unable to find any singing males, so far,
between Weldon and the headwaters of the river (also called Staunton River)
in Virginia.]
I also would be very interested if anybody birds the Emporia region and
could tell me where they have not (or have) found this species.
The habitat, both along the Meherrin River and along Fountain Creek, in the
coastal plain does not seem appropriate for Ceruleans (not levee forest, not
tall deciduous trees). West of I-95, though, there seem to be some spots
which might do for the species, just above the Fall Line.
A better way to contact me is to call 252-583-7371 and tell my answering
machine the best time and a phone number to call back to you. It may take
some weeks for me to check my e-mail.
