VA Birders,
Pat Blyer, Bill Cross, Betty Kilgore, and I went birding at Roaches
Run-National Airport-Gravelly Point, Arlington Co., and Daingerfield Island
(with restaurant and sailing marina just south of National Airport),
Alexandria, this morning. All sites are located along the George Washington
Parkway. Our first stop was the big pond at Roaches Run, where we saw our
first Caspian Tern of the year. Later, looking across to the south end of
National Airport from Daingerfield Island, we saw at least 18 Caspian Terns
in a group on the pavement just inside the fence at the airport! Other birds
of note at Roaches Run were 2 Red-necked Grebes, 1 Pied-billed Grebe, 58
Double-crested Cormorants in the water, an Osprey flying over, and a Brown
Creeper and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the parking lot.
At Daingerfield Island, a pair of Ospreys were on the nest on the channel
marker just behind the restaurant, looking toward the airport. A
Red-throated Loon and a Barn Swallow were our other highlights at
Daingerfield Island.
