Hello VA-Birders:

The meadow at Riverbend Park (Fairfax County, VA) is more attractive this
Fall than ever before. The bushes and grasses that the park managers planted
and nurtured over the last few years were given a boost by this year's
weather, and the center of the field is now filled with dense, varied
vegetation that offers food and cover for birds and other animals. The
little pond that last year was a dry ditch is now brimming with water.

Since early October the meadow has been attracting lots of sparrows:
White-throated, Song, Swamp, Field, and White-crowned, and I have been going
out regularly in hopes of seeing a Lincoln's. This afternoon Fortune smiled:
a Lincoln's Sparrow flew across the path in front of me, landed at the top
of a bush no more than 50 feet away, and perched facing me for at least two
minutes.

To visit the Riverbend meadow, drive past the main (Visitor Center) park
entrance and continue on Jeffrey Road, which takes a right turn and leads to
the Nature Center parking lot.  I saw the Lincoln's Sparrow along the path
that dog-legs across the middle of the field, in the section between the
pond and the large cluster of cedars in the south-west quadrant of the
field.
