Spent an hour along the Potomac at Riverbend Park today checking on the
ducks. As usual, lots of Ring-necked ducks and Bufflehead; also five male and
several female Redhead, two male Canvasbacks, a few Ruddies and Gadwall, and
about 15 or 20, Common Mergansers, all in a group, just before sunset.
I also found two Pied-billed grebes and a winter plumage, Horned Grebe, my
first at Riverbend this year. The Horned Grebe and one of the Canvasbacks
were very close to the Virginia shore, offering excellent looks.
