Greetings VA Birders,
I did some quick birding around Byrd Park today around lunchtime 12:30-1.
Fountain Lake
15 Ring Neck Duck
4 Bufflehead
Carillon Area
3 Great Horned Owl. The 2 young have fledged now. Today they were in the
Pine next to the nest Pine. On Sunday (3/21) they were in the lone Pine
toward the gravel parking lot.
1 Red Headed Woodpecker in gravel parking lot.
Swan Lake
1 Purple Martin
3 Tree Swallow
In evening I walked a loop between Reedy Creek and 42 St. in the James River
Park. Fairly quiet. No apparent migrants except 1 Eastern Phoebe, and a
couple of White-Throated Sparrows. I did come across another family group of
3 Great Horned Owls (1 adult, 2 young). They were about half way between
Reedy Creek and 42 St. near the storm drain on the river side. Nest site
appeared to be in a hollow fork of a Plane (sp.?) tree. 1 of the young had
quite obviously recently fledged as it was clambering about some low
branches a little way from the nest.
