This afternoon at about five-thirty PM, my father and I found a Red-throated
Loon on Germantown Lake in Fauquier County (this is also known as Crocket
Park). The bird was still in basic plumage. Also on the lake was one
Red-necked Grebe approaching alternate plumage, a single Pied-billed Grebe,
and about twenty Ruddy Ducks with some striking alternate plumaged drakes.
Tree, Barn, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows as well as Purple Martins were
flying over the lake in the mist and drizzle. This is only the third
Red-throated Loon that I know of in Fauquier County, one found by David
Johnston some years back, and one by Sue Heath a couple years ago.
Cheers,
Todd
