A single Red-necked Phalarope was seen on Lake Arnold at the Blandy
Experimental Farm in Clarke County, VA this morning (8:30 am). Eight birds
were seen there as recently as Thursday evening. The remaining bird is a
female in breeding (alternate) plumage and is quite a treat in her own
right, nonetheless. The bird flew several times between an area under two
large weeping willows near the gravel road and a small cove on the far left
corner of the Lake, beyond the Purple Martin houses. Also present were
both Orioles, Yellow Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Martins, and many Tree,
Barn, Bank, and Rough-winged Swallows.
Blandy Experimental Farm is home to the State Arboretum of Virginia and is
open free of charge 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. We're located on US
50, 1.5 miles east of the intersection of US 50 and US 340. Lake Arnold is
the largest of the ephemeral ponds on the property and can be reached from
the gravel loop road, about a half mile beyond the end of the paved road.
