Hi VAbirders,
Laura and Ellen, sorry I missed you two. I was there about 1:30, couldn't
resist going a "little" out of the way on my BJ's errand in order to see
the Red-necked Grebe, and assorted other birds. Fun! And, ----------->
Some of the mixed ducks, which are green in very
erratic spots, caused me to call my son who is into genetics and biology
at GMU. He may drop by to see mixtures in action.... The young of these
ducks are huge. One is a fawn color. I had not seen him earlier. The
bufflehead was nowhere to be seen by 11:30 or so.

Regarding the "mutt" ducks on the pond, I saw a trio of mutts who stayed
together all the time, following each other so closely, it reminded me of
mountain climbers roped together for safety. Anyway, the fact that they
stuck together and the fact that even though they were mutts, they strongly
resembled one another, made me wonder if they were nestmates. The striking
thing about them was, at least in the light I saw them in, their heads
looked brown, but with white starting under their bills and then continuing
down their fronts. It occurred to me that they might be Mallard/Pintail
hybrids. Just a thought.
Thanks once again to Laura for sharing her great birds and to everyone else
who posted about it so that I finally got my tush out there to see it!
