Greetings,
Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. today, I watched a Red-necked Grebe at the Upper
Occoquan Sewage Authority, just off Rt. 28 in Fairfax County. I believe it
was the same bird that I "barely" saw two days ago there, but because of poor
visibility (snow!), I couldn't nail the id. Something told me to go back and
check..didn't see it yesterday, but went back today and thanks to much better
light, I got a clincher look at it. The large, yellow bill, white check
patches, and reddish neck suggested Red-necked Grebe approaching breeding
plumage.
There were numerous Hooded and Common Mergansers with a scattering of
Red-breasted Mergs, handful of Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead, and Am. Coots.
Plenty of gulls to sort through..mostly Ring-billed and Herring.
An interesting sight was a deer standing in the water, feeding on the berries
of a cedar tree that was leaning out over the water.
