I never had a chance to post this e-mail yesterday.
I took off a day from work yesterday and looked for birds around Craney
Island.
There was a male Red-necked Phalarope present at Craney Island (Portsmouth,
VA) on Tuesday between 11:30am and 2pm. He was with a flock of Semipalmated
Sandpipers. At least 2 White-rumped Sandpipers were also in this flock.
From the office, go about 0.7 mile down the westside north-to-south access
road to a east-to-west road. Walk down the east-to-west road a very short
distance, and the flock was present in the south pool (right-hand side)
close to the intersection of these two roads.
This past Sunday, I saw the concrete barriers on the islands of the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (near Virginia Beach, VA). I contacted the
bridge-tunnel authority. They told me that as long as a person has a letter
of permission to bird the islands, the person can drive past the concrete
barriers.
Also, I wanted to thank everyone to responded to my questions about finding
access to the Eastern Shore islands and finding herons. I did found out
that The Nature Conservancy does not offer trips out to the islands anymore.
