VA-Birders,
There was much thawing of ice in the Potomac overnight, but the
waterfowl remain at Riverside Park, many even closer to shore. Pretty
much the same cast of characters as yesterday with Gadwall, American
Coots, American Wigeon, and Lesser Scaup predominating in the rafts
closest to shore, but at the Vernon View pull off, about 30 REDHEADS
and one Ruddy Duck were mixed in with Lesser Scaup, a few Canvasbacks
and more coots. At the pull off near Waynewood, there there 8 more
Redheads and one Greater Scaup.
Despite a rather lackluster winter birding season in Northern
Virginia, Redheads have been reported more often than usual, it seems.
Overcast skies and a bit of chop on the river made photography
challenging, but a photo of two sleeping males and an alert female
Redhead can be seen at

I realize that a web link in a post may break if it is interrupted at
the end of a line. This happened yesterday with my link to Fox
Sparrow photos. Only the first part of the link was highlighted, so
clicking on it did not make a connection to the web site. Others who
have included links in posts have had the same experience. I think
using a separate line for all links might take care of the problem.
Here is yesterday's link again.
