Greetings,
We took a spur-of-the-moment bird walk at Riverbend Park, Fairfax County, VA
this afternoon.
We started at the boat ramp area and worked our way upriver to the intersection
of the river trail with the Nature Center trail.
We saw at least 25 BUFFLEHEADS, a WIGEON, at least 9 WOOD DUCKS, a BLACK DUCK,
several pairs of COMMON MEGANSERS, CANADA GEESE, a PIED BILLED GREBE, DOUBLE
CRESTED CORMORANT, numerous RING NECKED ducks, MALLARDs, and, for us, the
surprise of the afternoon was seeing two male RED BREASTED MERGANSERS down
river from the boat ramp area.
Also, we saw an OSPREY, RED TAILED HAWK, and an AMERICAN BALD EAGLE perched in
the top of a dead tree on the Maryland side of the river.
It was a nice afternoon for a walk.
