This is my first posting to va-bird. I have nothing new to report. Just that
after four trips out to Burke Lake in three days I finally saw the grebe and
just wanted to let others who might be wondering that as of 1:30 pm this
afternoon it was still there. But when I saw it today it was to the right of
the marina when looking out towards the lake and also to the right of the long
fishing pier. I followed the shoreline past the pier and found 6 birds
bobbing around about 40-50 yards straight out from the first cove. Four were
Ruddy Ducks, one a Pied Billed Grebe. The 6th bird was larger but I couldn't
be sure of what I was looking at because it had its head tucked in. I stood
there for about 15 minutes and was rewarded with a stretch of the neck as it
lifted itself up out of the water, spread its wings a few times and then
started preening. Had great looks because it was so close to shore and feel
sure that I was looking at the Red Necked Grebe.
Can anyone tell me if this bird has been identified as a winter adult or an
immature? I have an old Peterson's and the 3rd edition of National Geographic.
Nothing looks quite right to me.
