Found a family of Red Headed Woodpeckers (maybe 10 in all) 1/2 mile or
so from the ranch office of Marriott Ranch in Fauquier County. Go to
www.marriottranch.com for directions. Go to their main office (not
trail riding section). Check in. Then follow the Alfalfa Field Road
about 500 yards. A hundred yards or so before the woven wire fence on
the left side of the road ends you should go down the draw to the
right. Go through the red gate (be sure close the gate behind you) and
in to the woods down to the Rappahanock River. It's a fun place to
visit even if you don't find the woodpeckers. Saw a lot of meadow larks
too (in the maternity field through which you drive to get to the ranch
office). Last year about this time they saw a swallow tail kite for two
weeks or so, right in front of the ranch office. Good luck.
