I drove over to Highland County this morning and found the RED
CROSSBILLS that were previously reported. There were at least 6,
probably more as I could hear others calling further away. They were
located at the hairpin turn, west of the Confederate Breastworks, and
were "gravelling" and chowing down on those pine cones. It was pretty
cool.
Other highlights of the day included a GOLDEN EAGLE at the spot on route
644 that flew right over my head. Pretty sure it was a 2nd year bird.
Two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were encountered on route 642 (thanks NVBC!).
Both were light morphs. Nice birds.
One of the feeders in McDowell was loaded with PURPLE FINCHES. The
other one was pretty dead as was the feeder at the Beverage's in
Monterey. A beautiful place to visit. Good birding.
