Hello All,
Robyn and I were already planning a Sunday drive in Highland and
appreciated the post from Friday's sighting of Red Crossbills on Rte
250, just west of the Confederate Breastworks rest stop. At noon today,
we stopped at the gravel above the 15 mph hairpin and listened for less
than five minutes.
1 male and 1 female Red Crosbills appeared briefly, but prominently, in
great sun on one of the deciduous trees at the bend. An 18-wheeler
happened to come along at about the same moment, and the pair moved on
downhill as the friendly driver chugged along.
Across the road from the gravel, a very warm sunny area yielded numerous
D.E. Juncos and a few other species. Even though cold and windy at the
rest stop about two tenths of a mile uphill, the sunny area was shielded
from wind and would not have been a bad place to wait longer for more
birds. The pines are covered with cone crop.
