Northern Virginia Teen Bird Club can add Palm
Warbler near tower and Cooper's Hawk to the Sat
AM list for Huntley Meadows. Beyond the tower we
had 4 male and 4 female wood ducks. Several
rough-winged swallows and tree swallows were
flying around the marsh.

1. A reputable source (an experienced hunter
and former FWS official) told
me that he saw an oldsquaw on a pond in Loudon
County last weekend. It was
a male molting into summer plumage on a small
pond off of Rte. 287 (Berlin
Turnpike). The pond is immediately after a
larger pond that often has swans
in it. Presumably it is long gone, but it is
an interesting location.
2. The warm weather pulled in a few new species
at Huntley (YELLOWTHROAT and
THRASHER). PINE WARBLERS must still be moving
- I saw a couple of very drab
females in places where they do not
traditionally breed. Shorebird numbers
are building: 33 SNIPE, 5 PECTORAL, 2 GR.
YELLOWLEGS, and 1 KILLDEER. Also
in the wetland were 2 female RING-NECKED DUCKS.
Other notables:
Red-shoulder 1
Sharpie 1
PB grebe 2
Green-winged teal 30 (no shovelers)
Wood duck 2
Hooded merg 2
Barred owl 1
Flicker 12
Phoebe 6
GC kinglet 9
Yellow-rump 3 (a three-warbler day!)
Song sparrow 5
Swamp 10
White-throated 10
Field 15
Junco 2
Towhee 4
Rusty BB 15 (I may have missed the morning
commute, as I got to the wetland
a bit after sunrise)
