Va birders,
I went down to Bethel Beach last Wednesday and saw ~20 Least Terns on the
far end of the spit. Two birds appeared to be sitting on nests.
I only learned this weekend that Least Tern's nesting sites are protected
on the barrier islands so I thought I should bring this up. I know that
people walk to the end of the spit on their exercise routine, and there
were two Labs running around out there without any sign of an owner, so
these birds are surely subject to disturbance.
If anyone knows who to contact about protecting this area please get in
touch off list, or just forward this post to the appropriate people.
If anyone needs a Least Tern or wants to photograph it, I trust that you
will scan ahead and keep 100 yards away from nests and groups of birds who
may be around nests. They are very obliging birds to see and pbotograph in
that they hover in place looking for food. I got lots of good looks as
they flew along the foot of the spit and had a couple different birds
hovering within 30 feet of me, and got some good shots.
Good birding,
John Fox
