Hello Everyone,
Rich's post reminds me that I haven't seen ANY reports of Red Knot in VA this
Fall, and I believe I saw one report in the Spring. Has anyone seen a Red Knot
yet this Fall? Off-listserv replies are fine.
Along the lines of the plight of the Horseshoe crab, and therefore the Red
Knot, the NOAA article at the link below makes some interesting points. #1)
environmentalists may have an ally in the pharmaceutical industry in that
apparently the crab's blood is important in detecting the presence of bacteria
in patients. #2) it looks like at least one researcher is working on an
attractant that could substitute the need for using the crabs as bait for eels
and conchs. It looks like some fishermen are interested in the success of this
as well. To me, this seems like the potential savior for the crab as well as
the Knot.
