I've been following the Barnacle Goose posts and maybe I missed it,
but I've yet to see any mention regarding the probability as to whether
it is a legitimate bird. Pretty much it's been my understanding regarding
Barnacle Geese what the third edition NGS says, "Numerous east coast
sightings south of the Maritime Provinces are probably mostly escaped
birds; inland and western birds are almost certainly escapes."
I don't want to sound like a stick in the mud here, and I'm game for a
drive to Va., but how has it been determined that this bird is not an
escapee? I'd like to hear from someone on the Va. birds records committe
what their opinion is as to the likelihood of this bird being accepted.
If memory serves me correctly, the WV records committee voted not to
accept a Barnacle Goose in WV a few years back.
