Greetings,
I was in the parking lot at Fauquier Hospital Saturday evening at
eight-fifteen when I heard a bunch of Purple Martins calling overhead. I was
pleased to
see a couple hundred of them up there, milling about. I watched them until
eight-thirty-six when the last of them disappeared into a mostly coniferous
stand of trees at the south edge of the hospital grounds. All told I estimated
the flock at 200-250 birds.
Interesting was that these birds seemed to be sharing a roost with a large
(circa 1500 birds) icterid flock. The blackbirds were arriving in flocks of 50
to a couple hundred, mostly grackles, but clearly Red-wingeds, Cowbirds and
some sturnids mixed in.
At eight-forty, when I was getting into my car, four Common Nighthawks
appeared from the west, and headed southeast and out of sight.
Cheers,
Todd
