My grandfather was shot and killed by a fellow hunter. He was one of the
uncountable numbers of people killed by hunters each year.
We ONLY go to hunter-friendly natural areas on Sundays, which severely limits
our choices and days out since the weather does not always cooperate on the
one-non-hunting day of the week during the hunting season(s).
When we take the dogs walking in natural areas during hunting season(s), we
always make sure they not only are leashed but also wearing orange vests. We
HAVE encountered illegal hunters on SUNDAYS in the Great Dismal Swamp and other
places.
I am all for responsible and sportsman-like hunting despite our family's loss,
and I am a sharp shot and buy duck stamps although I do not hunt. But I
believe that 6 days a week is ample time for hunters to hunt, whie 1 day a week
is NOT ample time for the rest of us to hike, canoe, bird, and otherwise enjoy
our natural areas in safety.

Several birdiers have been shot while birding.........and killed. I was shot
by a duck hunter in Massachusetts while I was fishing. And while duck
hunting on Cape Cod I was hit by a pheasant hunter. Sprayed me with six shot.
But
no one kills more hunters every year than other hunters. Just ask Harry
Whittington. I hunted for decades in Mass. and never needed Sunday for hunting.
It
gave us an excuse to ice fish or go down to the Cape and try for holdover
stripers or sea run trout. I don't recall ever hearing a hunter complain that
we
needed another day to hunt. It gave many people an incentive to take another
week day off. Sunday was for walkers and birders and it was also a Blue Law.
