Hi Va-birders,
I had an endearing assortment of awkward teenagers at the feeder this
afternoon. Three SONG SPARROWS that nested in the garden showed up,
giving just the little buzzy part of the song and showing no manners at
all at the feeder, just flying in and landing. One gave a wonderfully
innocent/clueless look at a HOUSE SPARROW that squawked at him. A WHITE
BREASTED NUTHATCH displayed the same manners and stayed much longer than
usual, then perched on the patio table until a sibling came in and they
went squabbling off through the apple trees. A vividly fresh male
EASTERN TOWHEE came in who gave just one whistling note, that could
hardly even fly yet. He looked like a giant butterfly! A CAROLINA
CHICKADEE flustered around the feeder a little and then gave up, while a
TUFTED TITMOUSE didn't even come up to the feeder.
The innocence of youth.
Good birding
