Greg Beck and I birded the hot-spots in Eastern Prince William County
today. We totaled 89 total species and 17 different Warbler species.
We arrived at Possum Point at 5:45am, it was quite cloudy so the birds
were slow to rise but we still had good numbers and variety. At our
first stop out of the car we were greeted by a singing GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH that complemented the numerous Wood Thrushes. Warbler activity
was not super heavy but still good diversity. We picked up 10 species
including at least 2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, CAPE MAY, and
WORM-EATING,. Right as we decided to leave we saw a nice spat between
an Osprey and a Bald Eagle.
We then moved on to Leesylvania which was fantastic for Warblers. We
got into a large group along the river that included, WILSON's,
CANADA, Redstart, Yellow, Magnolia, N. Parula, Blackpoll, and Black
and White. These guys were mixed in with a good number of Cedar
Waxwings and Vireos.
We finished the day at Dyke Marsh, which was slow, but we still added
Black-throated Blue to our list.
The 17 warbler species were:
