Hi everyone -
The two large lakes in Prince Edward County, Sandy River Reservoir and
Briery Creek Lake, both had largely frozen surfaces this morning with small
areas of open water in and around which ducks and grebes were concentrated.
Highlights were a Red-necked Grebe and a White-winged Scoter at Briery (had
three grebe species in view simultaneously), and a White-winged Scoter at
Sandy River. Canvasbacks, Redheads, and Greater Scaup were at both sites as
well, and Greater Scaup continue to significantly outnumber Lessers --
unprecedented here until the past several days. Several other duck species
were present as well, and at both lakes a hungry (?) immature Bald Eagle
occasionally threatened the ducks.
