Hi Everyone:
There is an excellent likelihood that Cave Swallows (and perhaps an
Ash-throated Flycatcher or two) will be found this weekend.
A pronounced cold front is forecast to have arrived by then, with much
colder temps and NW winds on Saturday into Sunday. This follows the
prolonged warm spell with continuous southerly flow of some sort that
many of us have been having the past week. The next day or two has some
rain and continuing south and southwesterly flow ahead of the front,
which should help the process along. Swallows may start to appear
Thurs/Fri in the eastern Great Lakes region, and on Sat/Sun (possibly
late Fri) in the Eastern Seaboard states. So get out and check your
favorite swallow spots: coastlines, rivers, lakes, and ponds when the
cold air and NW winds arrive! Although I don't think there will be the
large number of last year (the frontal system isn't as strong as last
year's), there should be at least some birds found.
Also, given the prolonged mild period with southerly flow, there has
very likely been a "penned up" migration of regular short-distance
passerine migrants, owls, and hawks, so the weekend should be good for
those as well.
