VA-birders.... Here is a position that some of you might be interested
in. TNC is gathering data on breeding birds on their properties across
the state. They are looking for a volunteer to coordinate this effort.
Contact Scott Boven direct if you are interested. Larry
Statewide Breeding Bird Project Coordinator. This is a leadership
volunteer position to help The Nature Conservancy continue its program to
record data about breeding birds in Virginia. The coordinator recruits
and oversees a statewide collection of 10 group leaders (who in turn
supervise other volunteer birders) who are responsible for visiting key
nature preserves to gather breeding bird data following a standard
breeding bird atlas protocol. The coordinator provides the bird project
protocol to the group leaders and keeps in regular contact with the
leaders from April through July to troubleshoot any problems. The
coordinator regularly collects the data from group leaders and reviews it
for inconsistencies, possibly enters the data into an existing database
and summarizes the data, and oversees that the original datasheets and
the updated database are submitted to The Nature Conservancy at the end
of each field season. Commitment: an average of 2 hours a week for 2
years. Busiest season: April - September. This volunteer can be located
anywhere in the state, and will most likely work entirely via computer
