Va-Birders: I got a very nice surprise this a.m. just as I was leaving for
work. I heard an unusual call out back and went to the window to check it
out. And there for the first time in maybe 2 winters was a female piliated
woodpecker. I, of course, had to stop and watch while she checked out our
suet feeder, flew back and forth and eventually decided it was safe enough
to come in for a snack.
About 5 mins. later I noticed the feeder swinging again and looked out and
there was a male piliated on the same suet feeder. What a great excuse for
being late for work!
I haven't seen even one piliated in years. We have lived in the house for
about 17 years and I've always had a piliated somewhere in the woods behind
us but these last few falls and winters they disappeared. So to have a pair
this morning is real exciting. I sure hope they stick around.
