Great fun this morning in Fauquier County. I was at the sighting in range on
the back side of Phelps by 6:15 am; early enough to hear a pair of
Great-horned Owls hooting! As I walked down the dirt road, among the fields
and meadows, I heard many Towhees and White-eyed Vireos calling and signing.
I could hear the chip notes of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and the buzzy flight
call of Indigo Buntings. As the sun rose I got really good looks at a
White-eyed Vireo close, in a Cedar tree, and then a Prairie Warbler flew in.
A blitz of migrant warblers stole the show: gorgeous male Black-throated
Blue & Chestnut-sided led the flock. However, they were soon upstaged by a
singing Yellow-throated Vireo giving great looks, in a small tree with not
many leaves left on the branches. Although I have heard this bird on many
occasions, this was the view that I have always desired. What a beauty!
