Our Ornithology class this afternoon observed a Red-tailed Hawk with a large
degree of albinism (i.e. partial albinism or leucocism) to its plumage on
Co. Rd. 666 in Bedford County. In flight its back and upper wings were
predominantly white, with scattered dark feathers, and its head was
relatively all white from what looks I got, which were limited to a few
minutes at a distance of 400+ feet while directing students to its location.
We never had a view of its undersides, but its tail was a typical red color
of an adult.
