The Painted Bunting continues to feed on the ground at Sterling House B&B in
Cape Charles (9 Randolph Avenue; east side of house), present all day
yesterday and through most of the morning today. Best time to see the bird
is between 0700 and 0900, it seems. Cold weather seems to keep the bird
around the millet, whereas warm weather produces longer and more frequent
absences. Generally, the bird disappears if numbers of grackles are around
but can be conspicuous and confiding if surrounded by House Sparrows, House
Finches, Slate-colored Juncos, and a few Song and Fox Sparrows, as has been
the case usually. The bird is often on the ground between a small American
flag and a large blooming Camellia bush. It gave full song in the yard
today when the sun poked out. The female Rufous Hummingbird is now
frequenting other feeders in the neighborhood and is not much in evidence,
though it was present this morning around 0900.
