The Pacific Loon found at Lake Anna yesterday (2/24) has not
been relocated today (2/25). As a matter of fact, I haven't seen
ANY loons on the lake today. Yesterday, there were 35-40 Common
and 2 Red-throated loons here in addition to the Pacific Loon.
The strong southwesterly winds (10-15 mph)are really churning up
the lake today in contrast to the relatively placid conditions here
yesterday. Yesterday brought overcast skies in the AM and light
rain in the afternoon. This type of weather tends to force birds to
stay put on the water. Late yesterday afternoon, approximately 700 gulls
were observed resting in the water just off the power station.
A single adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was among the Ringers, Herrings,
and Great Black-backs (this is only the second record of LBBG for Lake Anna).
Today, I have seen relatively few gulls on the lake.
Below is a link to a blurry but, I believe, recognizable photo of the
Pacific Loon at Lake Anna. I believe this is the first photographic
record of this species in Virginia.
