My mother Sue and I made it down to Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County
this morning with the hopes of relocating the Pacific Loon found by Jeff
Blalock on January 1 at the Palmer Point Recreation Area.  Luck was on
our side as I spotted a PACIFIC LOON around 8:15 near the cove area at
Palmer Point which is to the left of the boat ramp.  It was pretty foggy
down there and the bird was moving around and feeding quite actively.
We had very satisfactory looks but would often lose the bird in the fog
and then have to refind it.  Finally, I lost the bird completely and met
up with Jeff Blalock.  Shortly after, we were joined by Mark Johnson and
Susan (sorry, I didn't get your last name) from Lynchburg.  Once again,
luck was on our side as we refound the bird heading toward the point.
Everybody got good looks at the bird until it disappeared again in the
rain and fog.  It really started to rain hard at times and we didn't get
much more birding in.  Also present at Palmer Point was a RED-THROATED
LOON  and quite a few COMMON LOONS.  The Pacific Loon shows a well
defined "chinstrap".  I went back in the afternoon when the rain finally
let up to try to get pictures but, after an hour search, could not
locate the bird again.  There were a few loons very distant and
unidentifiable, so maybe it was with them.  Good luck to anybody who
chases this bird.
