After leaving Airlie, and on the way to Houff's for the Harris's Sparrow, I
stopped at Phelps WMA in SW Fauquier Co.
New for the day was a single Blue-winged Warbler, as well as a few N. Parula
Warblers (right @ the river bridge). Tons of
Yellow-rumped around, 2 or 3 Blue-headed Vireos, and 3-4 Ovenbirds.
Everything Todd said is true - Phelps is truly unique, and it is truly a
fabulous place to bird. I encourage any who can to check it
out. I hope to get back there soon.
After enduring a horrendous rainstorm south of Elkton, two minutes before I got
to Weyer's Cave, the rain let up. I spent about 30
minutes in Houff's back yard, when sure enough, the Harris's Sparrow showed up
- right on cue, and right where predicted - under the
flowering quince bush.
I was a bit surprised by the large number of White-crowned Sparrows. I also got
to see their RT Hummer and one Yellow Warbler. Their
ancient momma cat made a nice companion (she was obviously too old to bother
any of the avian visitors).

generous spirit.
