Hi all,
Though Virginia does have a specimen of Pacific Loon (thanks to Don Schwab
and Doug Davis: see: Schwab, D., and D. S. Davis. 1990. A Pacific Loon at
Back
Bay. Raven 61: 13-15), the species is very difficult to photograph here on
the coast (where usually seen with spotting scope, riding the choppy waves),
and all subsequent records lack photographic documentation. This Kerr Lake
bird
might be a good candidate for digiscoping, once the winds die down a bit, and
I hope that those interested in seeing a Pacific Loon in the state will give
a try in documenting the bird photographically for the state's archives. All
it takes is an inexpensive digital camera held up to your scope's eyepiece! A
good find, and potentially a first for the Piedmont!
