I explored a little bit of Orange County, Virginia this morning starting off
at Wilderness National Military Park, Hill-Ewell Drive, off of Rt. 20, south
of Rt. 3. This was my first time to this lovely spot of hay fields
surrounded by clumps of trees, fence lines and a lot of edge habitat. It
reminded me a lot of Manassas Battlefield NP. There were good numbers of
Yellow-rumps, White-throated Sparrows and both Kinglets. The high-light was
four Purple Finches feeding on the top of a tree in bright morning sunlight.
I then made a visit to George Harris's house and found both Lincoln's and
Vesper Sparrows, one of each. The only other sparrow that we found was a
Chipping, which is not too bad for only 3 sparrow total! And not too bad for
"yard birds" either!!!
Good birding,
Phil
