For the past couple of days there has been an Olive-sided Flycatcher at the
Blandy Experimental Farm in Clarke County. The bird was seen most recently
on Thursday afternoon. It seems to be hanging out in an area near a burn
pile on the eastern edge of the Arboretum. To get there, walk along the
southern edge of Lake Arnold to a conifer nursery. Walk through the
conifer nursery away from Lake Arnold, and you will arrive at the burn pile
after about 50 yards. There are Phoebes and Pewees in the area, but the
Olive-sided seems to be favoring the most prominent perches.
Bobolinks were seen at Blandy as recently as Wednesday morning. A flock of
about 20 were in a field beyond the Horse Paddock. Swallows including
Tree, Barn, Rough-winged, Bank, and at least one Cliff have been seen in
large numbers for the past week over Lake Arnold and various fields on the
property. The occasional Broad-winged Hawks have been passing
overhead. Warblers have been scarce.
