Greetings,
Yesterday after finishing up my work for the day (and temporarily between
thunderstorms), I headed to South Run Recreation Center (just off the Fairfax
County Parkway) for an overdue workout.
On the way in (at about 5:30 p.m.) I heard a somewhat unusual vocalization
that nonetheless sounded familiar. As I didn't have my binos (I hate when
that happens) and the rain was starting up again, I headed inside the gym and
made a mental look to investigate later. Alas, when I emerged from the gym,
the bird was no longer singing. I returned home, listened to my recordings,
and confirmed that the singer was an Olive-Sided Flycatcher. According to my
reading of the blue Virginia book, the date would just squeeze in at the tail
end of the spring migration range (and the yellow Maryland book date is a bit
later still).
I don't know whether the bird might still be there, and I've got to finish
scads of work today so I won't be getting out in the field, but I thought
that I'd post it in case someone else might be in the area and wants to check
out that location. As you are facing the Rec Center's front door, the bird
seemed to be singing from the wooded area at the edge of the field to the
right of the Center. Several years ago (in May) we had an Olive-Sided
Flycatcher feeding from a snag adjacent to our backyard for several hours at
a time on a couple of evenings in a row.
Happy birding,
Sue
