Hi all, Today was the first full day of banding at Occoquan. It was a
beautiful day, but
things were a bit slow (a bit windy) but we did band out first ever FOX
SPARROW, and our
2nd and 3d GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS for the station. Suzanne and I are
inclined to think that the fact we
opened about a week early is reponsible. The rest of the birds we banded
were the usual
suspects. We did have a lot of re-traps from last year the best of which
were a BROWN
THRASHER, a NORTHERN CARDINAL banded in 2005, a FIELD SPARROW banded in
2005, and best of
all, a CAROLINE CHICKADEE banded as an after-second year bird in 2003. That
little bird is
at least 6 yrs old. Jim Waggoner dropped by and told us that his survey
group had spotted
a SANDHILL CRANE in the meadows. We didn't get to see it on account of
having our noses
to the grindstone. ARGH.
Cheers, Joanna
