Hi all, Here is the official summary of the banding so far at Occoquan. I
am posting it for Suzanne Miller. Separate post
follows about today's banding. Cheers, Joanna
Spring 2007 at OCCO continued with fantastic days
until the avian gods
evened things out on April Fools Day (when we netted as many birds as we
had personnel).
On Wednesday we had a new species for the station Fox Sparrow, and our
3,000th bird a Carolina Chickadee; both banded by Joanna Taylor.
On Saturday, the annual ExxonMobil cleanup day, we banded another new
species for the station Mourning Dove, bringing the species total to 85.
ExxonMobil had a record number of participants, and we thank the dozen
people, led by Jim Waggener, who picked up trash in our prescribed area. We
had a male Northern Cardinal to band as they began; this NOCA was firmly
gripping a wooden clothes pin in his beak, which I had described as a
powerful seed (or finger) cracking tool. There was a reluctance amongst the
volunteers to be the one to release him, until a boy bravely stepped up.
The banding station is open this coming winter Easter weekend on Fri, Sat
and Sun until about noon. The gate for the public opens at 7 a.m. Due to
new rules and regulations on liability from USF&WS, visitors can no longer
walk the net lanes with us, but are welcome at the banding pavilion via the
path from our little parking area. Wednesday, April 4, is a rain-out.
