This morning, Wednesday 6 April, I birded Observatory Hill (O-Hill) in
Charlottesville from 07:25 - 08:40 a.m., enjoying a nice selection of
birds and the mostly sunny, warm weather. Compared to recent weeks,
birding is (not surprisingly) improving. Among the 29 species I observed
this morning was my first BLUE-HEADED VIREO of the spring, merrily
singing as it wandered the trees at the top of the hill; and my year's
first CHIMNEY SWIFT, a lone bird flying overhead. YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
were abundant (20+ individuals). I also saw 2 PINE WARBLERS, and a
single PALM WARBLER. A BROWN THRASHER was rummaging low in the brush
bordering Alden House. An EASTERN TOWHEE was nearby. At least two pairs
of EASTERN PHOEBE are nesting near the top of the hill. A single BROWN
CREEPER was present, too.
