The bird-watching at Observatory Hill (O-Hill) in Charlottesville was
quite lively this morning (Monday 2 May). Mike Iwanik, Cricket Barlow,
Dave White, and I enjoyed 40+ species, including numerous warblers,
vireos, and other interesting visitors. The warblers were represented by
Blue-winged (1), Northern Parula (1), Chestnut-sided (8+),
Black-throated Blue (5+), Black-throated Green (2 heard),
Black-and-White (5+), American Redstart (5+), Kentucky (1), Worm-eating
(2 or 3), Blackburnian (1 heard well), Yellow-rumped (25+), and Ovenbird
(a couple singing). We also had Veery (1), Wood Thrush (2+ singing),
Gray Catbird (3+), and all four of the expected vireos: Red-eyed
(several), White-eyed (1), Blue-headed (several), and Yellow-throated(1
or 2 singing). And we had both cuckoos: a calling Yellow-billed and
excellent looks at the bird of the morning, a happily foraging
Black-billed Cuckoo.
